Safe, Solid Railings and Stairs
Deck railings and stairs are the parts of a deck that take the most direct force and fail most often. A loose guard post or a wobbly stair is a real hazard, especially on a raised deck off a walkout basement or a second-floor door, which is common on newer suburban homes. Railings are also the part of the deck you see most, so replacing them is one of the easiest ways to change how an older deck looks without rebuilding it.
What the code asks for
Illinois requires local building codes to be at least as strict as the International Residential Code. For decks, the requirements inspectors commonly check include guards at least 36 inches high on any deck more than 30 inches above grade, openings small enough that a 4-inch sphere cannot pass through, stair risers no taller than 7 3/4 inches, treads at least 10 inches deep, and a graspable handrail 34 to 38 inches high on stairs with four or more risers. Your permit and Elgin's adopted code set the final numbers, and we build to them.
Railing materials
- Wood: the least expensive and easy to match to a wood deck; needs finishing like the rest of the deck
- Composite: matches composite decking and does not need staining
- Aluminum: powder-coated, slim balusters and very little upkeep
- Cable: stainless cables between posts for an open view; needs strong end posts to hold tension
- Glass: the most open view and the highest price
Fixr puts installed railings at about $30 to $50 per linear foot for wood, $45 to $85 for metal, $80 to $165 for composite, $115 to $175 for cable and $140 to $210 for glass.
Guard posts are the key
A railing is only as strong as the posts holding it. Notched posts or posts attached with a few nails are a common weakness on older decks. We fasten guard posts to the framing with through-bolts and blocking or with tested post-mount hardware, so the railing resists a person leaning or falling against it.
Stairs
Stairs need even riser heights and tread depths all the way down, a solid landing at the bottom and stringers that stay dry. Rot often starts where stringers meet the ground, so we land stairs on a concrete pad or pavers rather than bare soil. Wider stairs or a landing partway down can make a tall deck feel easier to use. Fixr puts wood stairs with pre-cut stringers at about $75 to $200 per step installed, or $125 to $250 per step with custom stringers.
Lighting and winter safety
Post-cap lights, riser lights and lights under the top rail make stairs easier to use on dark evenings, which arrive early in Elgin winters. Low-voltage lighting can be wired during the build. Since snow and ice collect on stair treads, we can also talk through tread materials and how to keep the steps clear.
What This Covers
Railings and stairs can be part of a new deck or a standalone upgrade.
Railing replacement
Old wood railings swapped for new wood, composite, aluminum, cable or glass systems.
Guard post reinforcement
Loose posts re-fastened with through-bolts, blocking or tested hardware.
Stair rebuilds
New stringers, treads and risers with even steps and a solid landing pad.
Deck and stair lighting
Low-voltage post-cap, riser and under-rail lights for safer evenings.

How It Works
1. Check the structure
We test existing posts, stringers and framing to see what can stay.
2. Choose the system
You compare railing samples and stair layouts with prices for each.
3. Install
Posts are bolted to the framing, rails and balusters set, and stairs built on a solid pad.
4. Inspect and walk through
We check heights and spacing against code, with a permit inspection when required.

Deck Railings & Stairs Questions
How high does a deck railing have to be?
Under the IRC, which Illinois uses as a minimum, guards are required on decks more than 30 inches above grade and must be at least 36 inches high, with openings that will not pass a 4-inch sphere. Local codes can be stricter; we build to your permit.
How much does it cost to replace deck railings?
Fixr puts installed railings at about $30 to $50 per linear foot for wood, up to $140 to $210 for glass. A typical deck has 30 to 60 feet of railing, so material choice makes a big difference.
Can I put cable railing on my existing deck?
Often, but cable railing puts heavy tension on the end and corner posts. Older posts usually need reinforcing or replacing so the cables stay tight and the posts do not pull over.
What is the code for deck stairs?
Common IRC limits are risers no more than 7 3/4 inches tall, treads at least 10 inches deep and a handrail 34 to 38 inches high when there are four or more risers. Riser heights should be even all the way down.
